2021.09.25 06:15 Titten_Maus A story. (LONG READ)
I have to be very careful with my rhetoric in this story because some may misinterpret the story as sub "rule breakers" or just simply be offended. If you are easily offended and do not approve of criticism, do not keep reading. This story is true and I am not fabricating it- I am just going to tell it how it happened.
I was in the ocean side city of Surat Thani on Thailand's East coast. I arrived there port pound in order to purchase an overnight ferry ticket to the diving island of Koh Tao. After finding my way on the baht bus and asking around for directions, I made it to the port "ticket stand" or rather just a table by the waterside selling tickets to the various islands off shore. I was about five hours early until dock and I am not one to just sit around and twiddle my thumbs. I left my pack with the ticket agent (hoping it wouldn't go missing) in a pile of other spoiled and un-showered travellers' packs and set off by foot into the surrounding streets.
I didn't have any objective or reason for walking about besides killing time and getting a bit lost. I eventually noticed the golden (at least I think they were golden) temple tops protruding from amongst the heights of this unknown city and I was immediately drawn to its presence just as the friendly neighbourhood cat is to your ankle in a familiar feat of curiosity.
I made my way through the main court yard and came upon the main door to the temple. I stood before it knowing I have no place to step inside. The monks of all ages were shuffling their way about- I could hear a few chimes of a gong or bell and all I could do was stand back and wish I could enter. I walked further and noticed a man- or monk rather- sitting outside a building which appeared to be a living quarters- on a chair behind a rather short fence around the perimeter. He was buried on an Ipad (which I thought was strange for a monk to be using but hey- it's 2015) and had a cleanly shaved head and thick black framed glasses.
The monk must have noticed my passing steps and began to motion his hand inward and welcome me to "come--- come!", his smile and harmless appearance nothing to fear. I was a 21 year old Canadian white guy and I suppose I was appearing to be harmless, too. Without hesitation I approached him and he enthusiastically shook my hand with a flow of questions of "Where you from? What your name? What you doing here? How old are you? Why you come Thailand?". I was charmed that he was interested to talk with me- after all, he is a humble and harmless Buddhist monk dedicating his life to the Dharma and enlightenment.
Appeared an old woman from the city carrying a white plastic bag holding a chilled tea drink in a plastic throw away cup. She handed the monk the alms with a smile and her hands pressed together awaiting a blessing. The monk merely took the bag out of her hand and motioned his hand forward as if a spoiled prince waving away his servant. After the old woman had left, he handed me the cool drink and insisted, "here, you have!". I thought to myself wow, what a generous person. I thanked him and we continued out conversation. I asked him about his Ipad and he said he needs it for school. He began to show me pictures of his university studies and how he was the only monk in the class- an unofficial class photo.
He stood out of his seat and said to me, "Come, come, we go somewhere. Not far." I still had over four hours to go before departure so I just did as I has been doing the past few months and just going with it. I can't exactly remember how this next part of the story went and it really isn't important but I will write it the best I can so the next few segments make more sense. I followed him to wherever we were going and he explained to me "the old man die- so we go to eat something". The funeral for the "old man" already happened and you could say we were going to the post funeral "reception" to eat something. I believe he said "we go to meet the others first" or something along those lines...
We met with a couple of other monks within the monastery courtyard- 3 I think- which were anywhere from 35 to 80 it seemed. If anyone here speaks Thai- please correct me if I am wrong- but I believe one of the monks was nicknamed "Lek". They explained to me that "Lek" means tiny in Thai and they gave this monk the nickname tiny because he was anything but tiny. I think he was the biggest asian person I have ever met. I am not the biggest or tallest person myself at 170cm (though I am taller compared to Thai people), but this monk was BIG. Not just height wise, but in mass, too. Not obese- but just chubby and cheery to say the least.
All of the monks were very happy to meet me. They greeted me with smiles and prolonged handshakes as it was with the preceding interaction. These others did not speak much English- nowhere close as to the Ipad monk. The Ipad monk signalled that it is time to go and we began to walk to the reception. Lek and the other monk (close to 80 years old) walked with me and the old monk grabbed and linked our arms together with a big smile and eyes a squinted as they are in his naturally rested position. At this point, I started to get a little bit weirded out but I reminded myself that I am in a different culture and that though this may be strange to ME, it must be the norm for Thai people and so I decided to just go with it and not push him away.
As we were walking through the narrow and zig zagging streets, with his limited and broken English, the old man tried to explain something to me. I couldn't understand him. I asked him to repeat but I still didn't get what he was trying to tell me. I called to the Ipad monk and asked him if he would please translate so I can understand. He told me that the old monk was telling me, "The Dharma forbids us to touch women....... but BOY is okay." At this point, I knew something was getting very strange. I started to cringe and out out my Canadian politeness I just smiled and nodded to the whole dialogue. The old monk kept gazing upon me with his enthusiastic smile and said "I LIKE you."
We arrived at the dead old man's funeral lunch. The old monk was no longer clinging to me like a flattered school girl so that made things a bit more comfortable. The Ipad monk (who brought his Ipad with him) suggested we start taking pictures together. Giant Lek came beside me and curled his massive arm around my shoulder to brace for a picture. I awkwardly stood there out of politeness and smiled for the pictures. A woman approached us and greeted the Ipad monk. I am not sure what she was saying, but she was very happy to see him and I am guessing she thanked him for coming. The monastery is very important in Thailand so having "higher up" monks attend the funeral must be an honourable presence.
The Ipad monk explained to me that the woman is going to bring us lunch now. I can't remember exactly what was on the menu, but I believe it was some sort of cooked nut dish- and it didn't look very appetising. I don't mean to go off onto a different tangent so I will keep it short- but IMO Thai food BLOWS. It sucks. Its bland all the way from its appearance to its smell. Hate me for saying it all you want to- but German or Hungarian food is where its at!
At this point I had no appetite and even if I did have one- I still would not have eaten the meal. I explained to the Ipad monk that I am NOT hungry and I do not feel like eating. He explained that "The old man died, so you need eat something. Thai tradition." I explained to him, "No THANK YOU, I am not hungry and I am not feeling the best (I wonder why)." He seemed to have understood and the woman brought be a bottle of water which I sucked down like sour candy.
Minutes passed and I sort of just awkwardly stood around and observed. There was nothing much else to do but kill time anyway. Lek came and stood before me. Lek didn't speak any English. This is where the story gets the weird and I am sure some of you on here will call me homophobic or intolerant or whatever you want to say- but I was there and I knew from my gut feeling what was going to happen.
The Ipad monk explained to me, "Lek wanna go to the bathroom with you. You go to the bathroom with lek." Lek gazed upon me with his lustful smile and put his hand on my arm. I told the Ipad monk, "No thanks, I'm fine. I don't need to go to the bathroom." The Ipad monk went further and explained, "Its okay, go to the bathroom with Lek. Lek REALLY wanna go to the bathroom with you." Again, and I know some of you probably think I am overthinking this., but I knew deep down that Lek didn't just want me to relieve my bodily functions- and that he wanted more. I do not experience too often in my life the gut feeling to just 'get up and leave', but this is one of those times. Its this time that I think I understood how it is for women and girls when men are trying to pressure them into sexual acts at a club or party and they just want to LEAVE.
That's what I did. I told them that I am going to leave now and I thanked them for the journey. Somehow I managed to find my way through the streets back to the port and I waited it out until the night ferry. We boarded an open floored deck with mats laid out on the floor side by side like canned sardines. Each bed was labelled according to your ticket number. I always like to be the last to board trains or plains or boats and when I made it to my bed my supplied ship line pillow was missing. I found myself between a Frenchman and a Pole and I asked the Frenchman where my pillow was and why everyone else got one. He said he didn't know but that he had a travel pillow. He was kind enough to give me the pillow that came on his bed and I was ever so grateful. We waited for the porters to finish loading the rest of the freight on the bow of the ferry and we set off for Koh Tao. I fished out a sleeping pill from my small bag which I brought with me in case of such uncomfortable scenarios. I offered the Pole beside me if he wanted one and he respectfully denied. Next thing I knew, I was awake and we were approaching the port at Koh Tao.
That's my store and my experience with some Buddhist monks in Thailand. I have dug further over the years and it seems that child sexual abuse is a common problem within the Buddhist monastery- just as it is with the Catholic church. You can hate on me all you want for making these statements but go and do your own due diligence and see for yourself the injustices happening in the world under the sheet of "religion". I am not putting down Buddhism as a whole or the teaching of the enlightened one. I just want to bring attention what can and does happen in our world. This is not to portray all monks as loop hole finding, homosexual paedophiles.. It is just MY experience and I hope you learned something from it.

2021.09.25 06:15 3614398214 Friendly reminder to anyone that might be poorly impacted by sleep deprivation to get a bit of shut eye, folks! Lest you loose a coffee, and have to contemplate life in a hallway.
My tics are usually fairly manageable, but seem to come out quite a bit when I'm cold, sleep deprived, stressed, or a combination of the three. It's harder to suppress when I'm not functioning as well. My body also just thinks it's funny to keep me on my toes.
Tipping tics really are a horrible combination with coffee.
Not burned, but heck if I didn't jump. Sleeping is a friend. Just not one I'm on particularly good terms with. You might be, though, so. There's that.

I feel like the Night Witch just got nerfed to the ground last update and it needs a buff so it can be comparable to the Mini PEKKA and Lumberjack. Supercell should buff the damage per second so it could actually be viable in the current meta.
